I came to Saint Paul in 73
The war between brothers took my family
My father at Shiloh along the sunken road
Two brothers at Bull Run
I was 7 years old

When I reach the prairie was like a sea of green
There was more sky than I'd ever seen
I felt like a pirate or a captain at sea
My horse was my ship and it soon set me free.



Now my fingers are froze but I can't feel the pain
My hands have gone numb and I can't hold the reins
In a corduroy jacket with 2 buttons left
I start to wonder why I never went west

I heard of the cowboys in old Mexico
And up into Texas where they never see snow
I heard of them crossing the Old Rio Grand
With only a blanket asleep on the sand

The Saint Paul stock yards where no place for me
So I went on a drive out northwest of Sioux City
I learned to rope and ride I was a pretty good hand
I worked hard for my money and I became a man.



I went to Fargo one last winter drive
I met a girl I took for a bride.
I promised I'd be home by New Years Day
Now I'm blinded by snow hope the horse knows the way.
